How to Disable Laptop Keyboard? Updated on 2020 June. Best way to permanently disable the inbuilt laptop keyboard on Windows 10

Laptop keyboard not working properly is common problem for laptop users. Mostly laptop keyboards automatically pressing keys like page down, numbers, arrow keys and so on. It is very annoying and for the most of the times we have to replace the laptop keyboard for fix this issue. But it is very costly for new laptops.

I had this problem for a while and I tried several things to disable laptop keyboard. But any of them didn’t work. Most common solution was to uninstall the laptop drivers or install an incompatible driver to keyboard driver of your laptop. But since new windows 10 updates, installing incompatible driver won’t work. So, we have to disable automatically installing only laptop keyboard driver to fix this problem. We have to use group policy to disable this feature.

There is group policy called “Prevent installation of devices that match any of this device IDs”. We can enable this group policy and add the device ID of our laptop keyboard to fix the problem. For that, first we have to find the device ID of your laptop’s keyboard.

  1. Go to Device Manager by simply typing “Device Manager” on windows start. (or you can right click on “This PC” and click “Manage”)
  2. Then find your keyboard and Right click on it and click “Properties”
  3. Then go to “Details” tab and click “Hardware IDs” from dropdown list.
  4. Then copy the first value of that list.

Now you have to go to Windows Local Group Policy Editor and configure the policy.

  1. Type “gpedit.msc” on start or Run and go to Group Policy Editor.
  2. Then navigate to “Prevent installation of devices that match any of this device IDs” by Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → Device Installation → Device Installation Restrictions
  3. Open “Prevent installation of devices that match any of this device IDs” and enable it.
  4. Click “Show” and paste the copied Device ID to its value field and press OK.

Now you can close the Group Policy Editor. Then go to device manager again and uninstall your laptop keyboard driver. It won’t automatically install again.
